Melbourne Cup Style Stakes

The Spring Racing season is well and truly upon us and I couldn’t be happier. My favourite event of the season is definitely the Melbourne Cup, anything goes when it comes to the style stakes and you can usually expect to see a lot of colour. So, in saying that, I’ve opted to dress in contrast and wear white! This year I am anticipating there to be a lot of netted veils, structured shapes and bare shoulders which is the foundation on which I have created my look.

The outfit

I chose my dress to be the focal point for my outfit this year. This white off-the-shoulder Harmony Dress is from Sheike and from the moment I saw it I was in love. It’s a reinvented version of the traditional peplum dress that has a little bit of an edge thanks to the split up the leg and the added elegance of a structured shoulder piece. It is the perfect feature dress for the Cup.

Once I chose my dress, my accessories fell into place. I chose black accessories as black and white is always an effortless and understated glam option and then gave it a little pop with bold pink lips.

The fascinator

My Veiled Cat Ears Fascinator is from Lovisa, as I mentioned before I am expecting netted veils to make a big appearance on the racecourse this year and so it was the obvious choice when it came to headwear. It’s got a little bit of personality but is still simple enough not to detract from my dress and is super affordable.

The heels

My Caged Stilettos are from Betts and I chose them because they linked in with my veil and added edge to my outfit. The fact that they buckle up around the ankle helps to provide extra stability which is an absolute must when wearing stilettos on grass (or anywhere for that matter)!

The clutch

My Melbourne Cup outfit wouldn’t be complete without something from Mimco. My Medium Black and Rose Gold Pouch is the perfect addition to my outfit, it fits all the essentials for Race Day and even has a little wrist strap to free up your hands for your race book or a sneaky champers.

The finishing touch

To finish off the outfit I popped on my favourite Rose Gold Pear-Shaped earrings from Mimco and my glittery pink lipstick from M.A.C at David Jones in the shade of Pickled Plum to add a bit of colour and bling. I kept my jewellery to a minimum as I wanted my feature accessories to be the focus.

My Top Five Tips for Spring Racing Style:

  1. Decide if you want your accessories or your outfit to be the focus, don’t make them compete for attention.

  2. Keep your makeup simple and natural, if you need a little something extra add a bold lip!

  3. Less is more, keep your outfit simple and sophisticated. Hemlines should always meet your knees and don’t show too much cleavage.

  4. Always, always, always wear a headpiece no matter how simple it may be.

  5. Choose comfy shoes that you can wear all day, there isn’t any room in that clutch for flats.

I can’t wait to see all of your beautiful Melbourne Cup outfits!
