Visiting New York is magical every time. The Big Apple; there is beauty and excitement at almost every turn, but where do you start?
If you’re anything like me, I like to make sure that I have a bit of a game plan when I travel and have a list of the must visit sites but also make sure I have some time for the unexpected moments. That’s why I thought I would put together a list of top places to visit for both experience and best capture for the ‘gram because, let’s be honest – we’re all doing it for the ‘gram.
1. Top of the Rock, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10020, USA
With 360 degree views of the city and the best view of the Empire State Building in the city, this is a must-see attraction and in my personal opinion it’s better than going up to the top of the Empire State Building. Make sure to schedule some time for your visit and not rush it as depending on time of day the lines can be long and you also have to watch a historical intro video before ascending to the Top.
2. Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, New York, NY 10038, USA
The iconic suspension bridge connecting mainland New York with Brooklyn. Spanning just under 500m, allow approximately 30 minutes to walk across the bridge. If you’re trying to snap a picture be sure to capture the New York skyline behind you and go early in the morning to avoid crowds, otherwise you’ll spend 29 minutes of your 30 minute walk waiting for pedestrians to pass as you attempt to snap your photo.
3. DUMBO, Washington Street, Brooklyn
Once you’ve walked across the Brooklyn Bridge it’s just a short stroll to Washington Street which is where you can capture your typical DUMBO shot with the Manhattan Bridge behind you. DUMBO stands for ‘Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass’.
4. Jane’s Carousel, Old Dock St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, USA
Jane’s Carousel is a 1920’s carousel located right on the shore of Brooklyn with incredible views of the New York skyline. While you’re down here grab yourself a scoop or three from Brooklyn’s Ice Cream Factory but be sure to take some cash as they don’t accept credit cards.
5. 5 Borough Pizza, 386 Canal St, New York, NY 10013 USA
You can’t visit New York without getting a slice of pizza. Now, if you find yourself traipsing through Time’s Square you may be inclined to go into Sbarro’s but this just will not do. To get an authentic slice right off the corner pop into 5 Borough and grab yourself a white slice.
6. Flatiron Building, 175 5th Ave, New York, NY 10010, USA
In the bustling heart of the city lies the Flatiron building. In a city of skyscrapers the Flatiron stands humbly at only 22 stories and so it is it’s triangular shape that makes it stand out. The Flatiron District is a popular subway stop and so there are plenty of stairways to the underground to capture your shot from a few different angles. Be careful whilst dodging traffic and people!
7. Shake Shack, Madison Ave & E 23rd St, New York, NY 10010, USA
After all of the exploring you’ve definitely earned yourself another meal and Shack sauce and crinkle cut fries are on the menu – while you’re at it throw in a black and white shake and you’ll be recharged ready to start gallivanting around in no time.
8. Streets of Soho
Every street in Soho was made for the ‘gram. The cobblestone paved roads and windowed shopfronts make for the perfect street style capture. Pick a spot, point and capture.
9. While We Were Young Kitchen & Cocktails, 183 W 10th St, New York, NY 10014, USA
A blush boutique restaurant and cocktail bar perfect for a nice meal or drinks with friends. The waffles and fried chicken are delicious and the decor is what pinterest dreams of – but keep in mind the venue is small so keep your group under 4 and be prepared to wait for a table as it’s walk-in service only.
